Trucks

What do trucks carry?

This was a fun lesson for us because it gave us a time to connect and talk about their father. The girls dad is a truck driver and this was a beautiful time for the girls to hear me speak of him and engage in questions about him and show that we are still friends even if we are not together. It most definitely brought up questions about when Daddy is coming home but it was good and I handled it well. Thanks to Mother Goose Time, we also had some crafts to keep our minds and hands busy after that conversation. We ended the day after this and just did a silly dance party and gave extra tight hugs!

What would you put in a truck if you had one?

Of course they said toys and make up! What kind of diva kids would they be if they had any other answer?! We decorated our truck, put them together and then had fun filling up the back.

Who delivers packages to your door?

The mailman, the brown truck guy (Fed Ex/UPS) and Daddy. Every day I always let the kids have the junk mail to open and open all of our packages so they are quite familiar with this. They love it. This was another activity that was mainly for Daniella and she loved it. She worked on her letters and Sonia worked on her patience and taking turns.

Cars and Service Station

What might need to be fixed on a car?

A tire, the windshield, the back of the car (bumper). All parts of my car that Sonia remembers needed fixing at some point. It's always good to jar her memory and see how much she actually stores away.

What type of vehicles do you see on the Theme Poster?

This is one of Daniella's favorite activities, though I never get too many pictures of her because she never sit stills. She loved naming all of the vehicles. They both took turns finding all of the items and looking through their looking glasses.

Invite a child to choose a Looking Glass and find that hidden item on the poster.

Sonia chose a stop sign. Here she is!

Where do you go if your car breaks down? Who fixes it?

A few months ago, our car did break down so Sonia remembered that we took it across the street to the service station and that the mechanic fixed it. We made our tool box and added it to our dramatic play station. The decoration was upside down but, hey, we aren't perfect!

Where is your favorite place to go in a car?

No shock here - the answer was unanimous - the toy store! After that, the supermarket to get toys. Mima's house to get presents and finally the park to play.

What does clean air smell like? How do you think dirty air smells?

We had fun with this one. Some of our answers for clean air was cotton candy, clouds, starbursts, flowers and soap. Dirty air smells like feet, yuck, and ew.

Did you know corn is used to create ethanol, a fuel that reduces the amount of air pollution given off by cars.

And we began our craft to drive this point home. (pun intended)

How fast can a car go?

Daniella said super duper fast. Sonia said 1 million fast. ha!

We enjoyed a nice matching game.

Where do you park your bike or toys? Where do you parents park their car?

The girls park their cars in the back yard and mom parks her car in the driveway.

The last activity was geared more for Daniella and gave us a fun way to go over numbers and letter. For Sonia, this was more about patience and waiting turns. Each child got a Parking Car Sheet and then rolled the die. Then, they parked their car in the space with that number and said the shape as well.

Bridge Mania

I want to start sharing more of what Mother Goose Time provides for us other than crafts and supplies. They offer us complete lesson plans. They suggest discussions. They really take the lessons to another level for us, leaving us to enjoy our children without spending hours of our own time lesson planning.

I will begin each post with a sub headline. The sub headline will be the discussion topic that MGT has given us. This way you will get more of an insider view of how our lessons roll out each day. We do not just do arts and crafts here. We are building thinkers through play!

Set out the Plane and Train Counters and invite children to work together to create a group of five trains and five planes.

Where have you seen a bridge? What did it look like?

Though I do live on Long Island, I am not your typical Long Island mom. We can often be found in the city on adventures so Sonia and Daniella have seen bridges before. Sonia remembered and then this sparked a conversation about the museum and play I had taken her to in the city. It was amazing to be able to connect with her and for her to remember such a special day!

I put out the corn starch noodles and both girls began sorting and then I modeled how they stick together.

After that, I let them explore and do their own thing. Sonia realized that the popsicle stick was not strong enough to hold up her bridge so she asked for some tape to hold it down! Good job, Sonia!

Daniella did a lot of sensory exploring. Smushing the noodles, letting them disintegrate in the water and loving the feel in between her fingers. Mush on, little one, mush on!

I will say that the school day ended right here. After our discussion about the day in the city that Sonia remembered and exploring these cool noodles while building a bridge, the time was up! We had spent one hour talking, giggling and creating. So, off we went to run our errands and explore the world together!
